[C320-list] OVERHEATING PROBLEMS and EXHAUST VENT UPDATE

David,

My local Yanmar dealer gave me the number of the regional distributor who
asked for my engine serial number and could determine my engine did not need
a new heat exchanger. I still think it is undersized. So make sure you
have your serial number when you call.

1. Since I have a 2004 and I think this was first production year?,
does anyone know the process for checking with Yanmar if there is a
recall and then how to get access to recall?

The Yanmar web site isn't exactly service oriented for support and the
local mechanics don't seem to enthused about tracking down recalls.

2. Also one post suggested removing the Heat Exchanger for inspection.
Based on its location, is there a trick to doing this as there is a very
small space between engine compartment enclosure and exchanger? Would
need to do this to confirm which model I have

3. As an update to the problem, I spent Saturday checking the Exhaust
Venting system as suggest by one post.

Findings:
1 Hose from exhaust elbow was plugged with carbon on top end- cleaned.
Rest of first hose 12" long was clean

2 Upon poking found the 90 degree brass fitting from the exhaust elbow
was solidly clogged with carbon- removed and cleaned. This is a brass
fitting and can be removed with a wrench easily. It is at top of exhaust
elbow

3 Looked in Exhaust elbow through fitting hole and discovered exhaust
elbow was also clogged solidly at that point- cleaned as much as
possible through hole.

4 Vent itself was fine and worked properly.

5 Left Vent off, put bucket under hoses and started engine. This forced
a bunch of water with carbon/debris out of the hose in the port
lazerette .

6. The whole process once you find all the components can be done in
under 1 hour and is easily accessible from the rear stateroom.

Reassembled and seem to have an improved water flow in exhaust. Couldn't
do a test run as the rain was coming down in sheets.

This leads me to believe that the motor with 1400 hrs on it has not
been run at high RPM as the amount of carbon seems excessive.( I
purchased boat this year). I think for my next action I may remove the
exhaust elbow and inspect

Subject: [C320-list] OVERHEATING PROBLEMS

Interesting thread! My first 320 #212 with a Perkins engine had
absolutely
no problems. The second 320 - # 1021 with a Yanmar engine which was
delivered
in UK in April 2007 overheated at anything much over 2000 rpm.

I discovered that Yanmar had introduced an upgrade to the heat
exchanger
sometime previously but for some reason my engine had the old exchanger
still
fitted. The original had about 8 cooling tubes inside it whereas the
newer
model has about 15 tubes. I spoke to the Yanmar UK main agent and had a
brand new
heat exchanger within a couple of days and it took about an hour to
fit.
Result - no more overheating - unless I am getting weed in the raw
seawater
filter! It might be worth checking that you all have the improved
exchanger
fitted.

I am however experiencing a significant leak from the water pump
bearings. I
have fitted two brand new pumps - under warranty - and also two new sets
of
bearings. Yanmar say it is either an alignment problem OR the drivebelt
is
too tight. I can't do much about alignment and am following the manual
exactly
as far as belt tension is concerned. Has anyone else had the same
problem? I
will have to respray the block this winter due to salt water corrosion!

Cheers
