I cruise around 2,800 RPM with a 3 blade prop. The engine has 1,500 hrs
created mostly by the previous owner.

Sam - Just curious since you have the same motor - what is your typical
cruising rpm ? (and do you have a 3 or 2 blade ? )

Susan - We also have a '99 C-320 with the 3GM30F Yanmar..No heating
problems
to date.

Susan - We have a '99 C-320 with 3GM30F Yanmar. I don't know how
different the 3GM30F is from a 3YM30, so not sure my input is
worthwhile. (I believe the YM is a bit larger ? 29 hp vs. 27 in the GM,
so I assume it may be a totally different engine ?)

I have owned her only this summer, but have motored the GM extensively
without overheating at 3000 rpm - took delivery near Washington DC and
motored the entire length of the Potomac and up the bay to Baltimore
area without incident - 10 hour days or more. She tends to run at like
165 to 170 degrees depending on the surrounding water temp.

Hi all,

Interesting that the issue is not isolated, I'll check the Google
groups, thanks. Does anyone here regularly run this engine for any
length of time @3000 and 'not' have an overheating issue?

Of course, the way we found out the replaced sender switch didn't help
was entertaining. A very experienced friend guided me thru our first
exit of Barnegat Inlet, lovely calm water, not much breeze, beautiful
except for the view of a sailboat smashed up on the south jetty...
sailed around outside a bit... coming back in, the breeze had kicked up,
the current against us, and I was given a talk on how dangerous this 300
feet of inlet was, and how using full power to maintain course is
important, and to give it full power now... and the overheating alarm
went off on cue. I throttled down drastically, calmly handed the wheel
to him to bring it in, barely making headway, and waited till we got
back to the marina to go hide in the head and yell (with all gratitude
to George Carlin): "F*#@ing meow!"

Susan

I have a 2004 C320 with the 3YM30. I have been having over heating
issues this year where anything above 2400 RPM drives temperature above
180. I understand 180 is the std operating temp. I sail in cool
northern BC waters, so I get a very standard intake temp for cooling

I have had mechanics go through entire cooling system and no issues
were found. Only other symptom seems to be limited water coming through
the exhaust system. The exhaust system was also checked with no visible
issues.

I have done some searches on the topic in the forum and there are a
couple of threads re this topic that seem to have some suggestions
based on various symptoms that you may recognize. I found a couple that
I will use to check things out

Overheating

Susan,

I have a Yanmar 3YM-30, year 2005. The first year all was fine. The
second
year the engine overheated running at wide open throttle after 15
minutes.
It usually runs a temp of 180 degrees, but overheats when it hits 220
degrees. I was told I did not have to change antifreeze every year
initially, but Yanmar told me I have to change it yearly even if it is
Dexcool. Since I have changed the antifreeze it does not overheat as
easily.
