I have found that " You will lose at least 20% in performance - ugh" is
simply not true.

WindWalker II did fine in 2 regattas that we have had at Coronado YC with
about 12 C-320's sailing. In the first we might have placed 2nd if we did
not make a navigation error.

You can not point quite a fine but the loose footed mail allows you to make
the main a large kite on down wind tacks.

Having Jauhree and I get underway in 5 minutes and having absolute control
on the power offset the minor amount of performance that you might loose;
and that is only into the wind.

My main is a clean as the day the boat was delivered 9 years ago.

We have not experienced problems with the Charleston system. There is a 350
here in San Diego that has but it was due to improper rigging at the time
the boat was commissioned.

I have found 2 thing that help. When reefing un-reefing the main:

1. Have to boom about 10 degrees above horizontal
2. Too much tension on the halyard will cause too much friction and make the
furling very hard.

Cheers,

You lose no performance with in-boom furling, and you can easily reef at any
batten from cockpit.
