For Jack from http://www.seatalk.info/ :-)

Term: porthole (n)
Definition: An opening in the topsides or deck structures that allow
light in, and which may be opened for fresh air. Portholes are usually
small, with a sturdy hinged glass cover called a portlight, that can be
dogged shut against a watertight gasket. (From the French "porte" meaning
"door.")
See Also: portlight

Term: portlight (n)
Definition: The heavy glass cover for a porthole that can be opened for
air, or dogged shut when the seas are rough.

No, Pat, the real question is: What IS a portlight? I asked the question a
few days ago (OK. Somewhat smartassly) and no one provided an answer. I've
owned sailboats for 25 years and I've never heard the term "portlight."

The real question is, is it rubber, or NBR, or
nitril or vinyl. Just because it is black you
can't assume it is rubber. Correct rubber does
not like oils but I sold hydraulic hose for years
and it is black but not rubber. I have one or two
of the gaskets and have yet to get it installed
correctly but the leak quick when the port was
rebed. I believe they came from Catalina Direct
and if you only want one I will make you a heck of a deal.
