When cruising I do not like to get into the speed racer mode, but  
going a little faster has its advantages:

(1) You might beat that storm into port
(2) You can travel to more distant destinations
(3) You can get that last slip before anyone else
(4) It is fun feeling the breeze when moving
(5) Add a little excitement for your guests

In my first two years of sailing my little O'Day 26 I had a strict  
rule - the motor would only be used for channels, getting in and out  
of slips, or emergencies.  Sails only was my youthful motto!  Well our  
first 20 mile cruise took about 15 hours - I was almost threatened  
with divorce on that adventure. LOL.  I personally liked the drifting  
around, however no one else in general did.

Either way I understand sailing for some is not about speed.  However  
I do enjoy moving along quickly with my boat - and only using the  
wind.  Now that is the rush!
