I agree sounds like a restricted exhaust elbow.? I would also check the prop and shaft.? Alot of crittes on teh prop will also cause similar problems...
I have a 94 with a perkins and had to change teh exhaust elbow a couple of years ago.

Black smoke and loss of RPM are signs of a restricted exhaust elbow. However, I
don't know why your problem is intermittent rather than continuous? You might
have blown enough soot out to temporarily reduce the restriction. You may also
see an increase in engine operating temperature.
