Its a fact, the hour meter starts as soon as the key is turned.
Every one in a while we forget to turn the key after stopping the engine and
if the low oil pressure alarm  doesn't sound and we forget to look for the
alarm light, the hour meter just keeps counting. as long as the key is on.
