Kirk,
Did you keep the old one? Could you have cleaned the carbon out and reinstalled?

On the Perkins, the elbow, at least an original elbow is cast, painted green like the rest of the engine. You can identify it by the bulge and the raw water cooling connection. The bulge is the water jacket where water is initially injected. The raw water is injected into the elbow at this point to cool the exhaust before it goes through the muffler and exists the boat.

We had to replace ours at around 2000 hours, it started to clog with carbon and had some corrosion on it.

Rollie, what I understand is the Perkins elbow is cast iron and make by Perkins for this engine. Some of the (early) Yanmars had non-cast iron elbow made by or for Catalina.

We have over 1,400 hrs on #62 and the one time I inspected the elbow (about 800hrs,)it looked just fine with no build-up. I do run my engine up to operating temp each time we go out; and, run it for a few minutes at low revs before shutting down. I hear that has a lot to do with the degree of carbonization in the exhaust system, not to mention the contamination of the engine oil. My rule: when I run it, I run it hard. I cruise at 2,700RPM which is about 5-6 kts. depending on wind and tide.

Our 1995 model #182 has only 3 screws holding down the aqua lift muffler? The aft port corner has no hole and no screw. Is that normal?

Should I try to add a screw to that corner by drilling a hole and self threading with the screw?

I may have some leaking from that corner, although the other 3 screws were not very tight and I tightened them today but did not run the engine afterwards.

Our Perkins does not seem to have an exhaust elbow like those described in recent e-mails? The closest thing to it is a 9 inch pipe with a 3" bulb in the center where a 60 degree downward curve exists coming off the aft end of the engine, labeled "exhaust outlet" in the Perkins manual, which clamps to the reinforced hose before the muffler.

Is that the elbow that should be removed from the back of the engine and checked for carbon build up & deterioration?

Our Perkins engine has 570 hours.

Thanks, Rollie Punta Gorda, FL
