I agree. Our Catalina 28 had storage cubbies as you describe. I used to put things like cameras, sunscreen  & binoculars there. Now they go into the sheet bags where they risk being forgotton & left behind at the end of the day.

My previous boat had cockpit coaming storage cubbies built into the seat
backs; one each side of the cockpit. These were a handy place to throw small
items and the local paper chart when not immediately needed. One of the
C320's short list of minor failings is a total lack of such storage places.
I truly miss them.

Has anyone installed any after-market fixed cockpit storage? I have been
snooping about the net and found a US company that manufactures such
products. I am considering installing their offerings in the back of the
port cockpit locker lid, and another in the upright area below the seat on
one or both sides of the cockpit. It would require cutting a hole of the
appropriate size in the installation area and then sealing and screwing the
fixture on inserting it into the hole.

See the link http://www.ssicustomplastics.com/netted%20boxes.htm for the
first netted box shown 46400800

and the link http://www.ssicustomplastics.com/coaming.htm for the coaming
box 49290600

I would appreciate opinions on whether it is a good idea to be cutting holes
in this fine boat at those locations. Would it be creating problems worse
than those the effort intends to solve?
