[C320-list] Distilled water and levels

The tube is usually split to make it easier to see the electrolyte. I never fill to the bottom of the split tube. That might be OK or an over-the-road vehicle; but, on a boat subject to healing, I like to have more leeway for the electrolyte to slosh around before it spills out.

Rick, re. your original message, it is not good (read bad,) to have the top of the plates inside the battery exposed. If that is the case, there may have been some damage done. You might want to fully charge the batteries and then check the charge with a hygrometer as that is the best way to tell if they have a full charge. If the difference between any two cells differ by more than 0.030, you should think about replacing it.

A good reference is Nigel Calder's book, "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual; How to maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems."

:) Yea, there is a tube that extends down from the fill holes. If you fill until the water touches the bottom of those fill tubes, you're about right. Flashlight will show what I'm referring to. It's best not to fill them right to the top because they'll leak acid when charging and that's a mess.

It might be necessary to hire a trained professional for this job... :) (kidding. :)

How much liquid would you fill a glass with?

There's no rocket science to this, fill it till you think it's just about right...

Not sure if you need a marine electrical book for this...

If it spills over, you've filled it too much...

Ok once again I have a simple battery question (ineed to buy a marine electrical book cause I am not knowledgeable at this point)

it seems the acid in my batteries is low so I need to fill with regular distilled water correct?
Real question how much? To the top? A little lower than the top?

Thanks for the help
Rick
