Thanks and you are right I should get help. But sitting here watching the
snow pile up I need something else to ponder........

Do you not use a topping lift or down haul to help control the pole?

Lamar

Put one end in the clew of the sail and the other end at the mast..go
wing-on-wing...make sure you use a preventer on you main cuz changes are
you'll be steering by-the-lee.

Also, in addition to simply asking for 'how to do it' or looking at a
drawing or a link...have a friend or someone who knows what they're doing
show you how to do it correctly and practice putting up the pole while your
co-skipper steers the boat downwind.

It can be dangerous if you have an accidental jibe....

Merely a suggestion from your Uncle O

While on the subject of whisker poles let me show my ignorance and ask if
someone would describe (or send a link to a description of) how to rig the
pole for down-wind sailing. We sail Chesapeake Bay and on the rare occasion
when the wind isn't on our nose it would be a help to tame the 135 in low
winds and powerboat chop. We have the track and sliding fitting on the mast
and a mature adjustable pole but have not used it for anything but to
support the winter cover since we've owned the boat.

Thanks in advance,
