That is correct. Any petroleum based product will deteriorate rubber based
products--and Vaseline is petroleum based...

I've heard you shouldn't use Vasoline on rubber, makes it rot. Can anyone
confirm that?

Thanks everyone! I replaced the o'rings a couple of years ago, but I felt
the profile was slightly smaller and also did the Armorall trick. It didn't
leak until now and the gasket material is degrading.

John, did you have any problems replacing the gaskets?

leaking through the O-rings. They are easy to replace once you pry off the
cover with a thin knife, then unscrew the latch. I took one of the old
O-rings to a nearby Ace Hardware store and got an exact replacements for
about 70 cents each. Since then - no more leaks.

anyone know what size o'rings are used on the latches and any tips on
replacing the gasket? The portlights are the old style with the twist
latches. They do not leak around the outside bedding, but the gasket
material is in bad shape and it may also be leaking around the o'ring and
down the latch.
