[C320-list] Small leak at Propeller Plate

I had a similar experience about 10 years ago when the fairing about the
prop strut began to weep after being in the cradle after a few days. I
scraped off what appeared to be gel coat at the base of the strut to allow
the water to weep from the strut over the lay up period. Apparently the gel
coat was used to seal the water from entering the space where the strut is
placed in the slot cut out of from the hull.

In the spring I snugged the two strut nuts about a quarter turn. Studs used
to attach the strut to the hull and the nuts can be accessed by removing the
centerline panels under the aft cabin mattress. Next, I placed a generous
amount of chalk sealant (3M4000) around the base of the strut to replace the
gel coat that was removed in the fall. I made sure to use an ample about of
sealant. Next day I slapped some bottom paint over the chalk.

Upon haul out in the fall and again in the spring, I check the sealant to
learn if could remain effective. Had to replace the sealant when necessary.
My fixes last about 5 years when I need to repaint the hull with new
ablative paint. No further concern with a weeping strut.

I suspect that one could use gel coat rather than using sealant, but for my
time and money, the adhesive properties of the 3M 4000 sealant successfully
prevented the water from re-entering the void at the slot where the strut is
secured into the hull.

Subject: [C320-list] Small leak at Propeller Plate

Hi

We have noticed small trickle of water at the seam of the plate that holds
the propeller shaft. Has anyone else had this problem.

There is a slight movement at the seam and droplets of water has appeared.

Anyone has any advice as to how to proceed. Members of our club told us to
drill small shallow wholes to allow any water to drain and then seal up seam
properly.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
