Allan,

Thanks for the good information on the job and the names. If I call him I
will mention that you said hey.

Rod - My understanding is that the pro used a device that peeled the paint
off in very narrow - maybe 2 inches wide - strips. Once the paint was off,
the hull was cleaned of all residue, including the wax that was left on at
the first paint job.

I took the boat to Bristol Marine on Rockhold Creek in Deale (across from
Herrington Harbour North). Scooter, the yard manager at the time, handled
all the details and brought the pro in. Scooter is now at Hartge's on the
West River as their yard manager. I would suggest giving him a call, remind
him about the job he did on my boat, and get the details and the name of the
pro from him. Scooter is a great guy to work with and someone I trust 100%.

To give you an idea of what kind of guy he is, when the boat was splashed
and returned to Herrington Harbour South, he called me a few days later to
let me know that he found blue bottom paint on one of the travel lift pads.
He asked me to bring the boat back for a short haul, just to ensure the
paint did not come from my boat. I brought it back up, he hauled it, found
that the paint was from Sea Shadow, applied another coat where the paint had
peeled, let it hang in the sling until dry, then re-splashed. That kind of
honesty from a marina continues to be a surprise for me. When I hauled
again 2 years later, the bottom was perfect - no peeling or paint loss
anywhere.

If you do call him, tell him I said hey! - Allan

Hi Allan,

What was the processed used when the bottom was done professionally and
properly?

Robert - Flaking paint usually is indicative of poor or zilch prep the first
time the paint was applied. In my case, the entire hull want not prepped.
Once the paint was removed and the hull properly prepped and re-painted,
there has never been a single flake again. Note that my dealer did not
stand behind the faulty prep... Cost me about $2,000 to have it done
professionally and properly.

All:

See subject field. While scraping my rudder, large paint flakes fell
off showing white beneath, which I believe is the fiberglass surface.
Can I simply sand and repaint, or is a more drastic procedure
indicated. The hull only exhibits the usual flaking, indicating some
touchup sanding before repainting. We've been considering completely
stripping the (2002) hull, just not this season.
