Chris,
I am reluctant as well, the reason I put out the request. What do you think about this, the boat is still on land, with the thru-hulls closed I partially fill with a water bleach mixture at let stand for about 15 minutes. I can't believe that would harm anything, but the snake idea just might.

We have the same problem on a regular basis in our area and pour a little
chlorine bleach down the drains to kill the algae and any critters...after a
day or so you can blow them out with a plunger. I've alway been a bit
reluctany to run a metal snake down them in fear of damaging the plastic
valve.
