An alternative is to use a similar color fill stick. They are the sticks that furniture restorers use. You heat them and fill fill the hole while the stuff is soft. A very slightly darker shade always is less noticeable. You then use a darker one and just make the grain pattern to match the surrounding wood by using a knife blade. Buff lightly with 60 steel wool and polish. Works great on furniture-never did it on the boat.
