Does anyone know where I can buy cable for the wind instrument?  It's a
5-wire, about 18 awg, shielded w/drain wire.  ---Warren

Warren

I dropped my mast about 5 years ago.  Ran into same type of problem.   While
mast was down I installed new wind inst.  and R/R all wiring in mast.

After talking with rigger and electronics guy we decided to make one run of
new wire and wind inst. all the way down the mast through the compression
post and made the splice inside the boat.    We just ran a painter inside
the compression post so when we stepped the mast we would be ready to go.
Make sure that you seal around the wires real good where they go through the
deck.

We felt that putting the splice in a place that was accessible was a good
idea.  If a line is going to fail it will usaully be at a splice.

Doug, I'm with you on this one.  I dropped the mast this year for some
eeded maintenance. Our wind inst. never gave us speed. Found the cable was
inched at the top between the mast top cap and the mast top. Been that way,
aybe for 15 years; but, probably didn't work its way through the insulation
or several years.
Anyway, at the base of our mast the wind inst. cable is joined with a
aymarine junction box that, apparently, came with the wind inst. I have
hecked Raymarine.com and a Raymarine dealer. NG, apparently not available.
I'm still learning about this. I plan to make a junction box using a small
lastic "project box" from a local electronics store. I'll glue a small
erminal strip in it and connect the wires there.  The store also has a
onductive spray for the inside of the box to preserve the static shield
hat is also in the cable. There are 5 wires in the cable about size 18-awg.
he cable has a foil shield to protect from EMI. There is a 6th, small
n-insulated wire between the shield and the insulation called a "drain"
ire. It is not a ground for a circuit. It is intended to carry any EMI from
he shield to a ground, probably at the instrument head in the cockpit. You
eed to maintain the continuity of the drain wire. I'll report back if I
earn more.
Anyone out there care to comment?  All help appreciated.

ubject: [C320-list] In-Mast Wiring Question
My boat requires that the mast be taken down each year for storage.  The
iring for the instruments, which run up the mast must be disconnected at
he base of the mast for this purpose.  The wires are very small gauge and
he quick connects that have been used are for larger wires.  Consequently I
ave experienced loss of a gauge for a season on more than one occasion when
connection is not made properly.  Does anyone know where to get connectors
ade for these small wires that are reliable?  Even Radio Shack was of no
elp.
Thanks...  Doug Stieber, Second Chance #406
