[C320-list] Refrigerator

Our ref has always drained the battery and frozen the food on the bottom.  We played with the thermostat setting and always keep it at the warmest position.  
Based on list recommendations I put a battery powered fan in side to move the air around.  The result was that it never shut off last night and brought everything down to 27 deg.
I'm beginning to think the thing is just broken.  Has anyone ever opened up the thermostat?  Any way to calibrate?
