Hi Andrew:

My rating was 165. I finished last all last year in our weekly beer can race. I did install a feathering prop and that did help with the speed. However for installing the prop you need to remove 5 seconds off your rating.

If you are ever in the Redwood City on a Wednesday night stop by the Sequoia Yacht club and you can jump on my boat for a sail and a beer. It's allot different sailing in the south bay.

Dennis

Hello Dennis,

As I am looking at getting my PHRF rating in the bay area soon, and I was curious to see your PHRF Number there.

Now, while on Lake Michigan (Holland, Michigan) my PHRF rating was 156 first with a wing keel. It then dropped I believe two seconds when I went to a fin keel, but then they bumped me back up to 156 with the fin and it held that number for good - and it was the same wing or fin! That MAY have changed now.

I would have loved to have had a 159 rating in the past. There were some long distance races I lost first by just seconds.

Either way some areas do not differentiate wing or fin, or only separate them by a couple of seconds. HOWEVER, there is a huge advantage fin over wing. Also, a folding prop vs. non-folding only has a slight difference in the handicap, but again the folding prop provides a huge advantage. Lastly, PHRF assumes a full complement of sails, racing sails, racing sheets and halyards, back stay adjuster and the stock boat design. Hence if you use Dacron sails with stock sheets and halyards, you will be at an immediate disadvantage in any race. There is no allowance for non-racing gear.

Now if you are out for fun and not trying to win, then this does not matter really.

BTW - are you doing the "Fiasco" race? I was hoping to this year, but my vessel is not in full racing form yet. I hope to ramp up this spring.

Best Regards,
Andrew
