[C320-list] Bimini

On #809 we use a helmsman's bimini. The forward edge stops within an inch of the aft end of the boom. This allows close hauled sailing (even when reefed) without the boom hitting the bimini.

It is mounted on TOP of the stern rail just aft of where the lifelines clip in. Makes a great handhold when sitting in the rail seats.

2 Straps on the forward outboard edges of the bimini clip to small padeyes on the toerail. 2 straps from the aft bimini edge clip to rings on to the vertical bar of the stern rail seats. These straps make a comfortable headrest. Sometimes we clip a throw cushion there for "Recliner" sailing. :)

It extends wide and high enough over the stern rail seats that people sitting there are comfortably shaded also and even tall people don't hit their head on it.

We have a zip in connector that joins the dodger with the bimini for rainy weather. We usually don't sail with this unless its raining.

Ours was made by "Canvas By Stiches" 912-262-9438 (probably near St.Simons island in Georgia) since that's where the boat came from.

Undo those 4 clips and it folds up flat against the backstay.

I will suggest that you avoid the rail mounting arrangement that has them clamping to the vertical part of stern rail where the lifelines clip in. They tend to get in the way of opening and closing the lifelines.

All

We want to add a Bimini to Cherie and would appreciate some information and
any recomendations from the group.

It looks like the rail mounting approach reduces the mounting complexity
and moves the frame up and out of the way a bit. Is there an argument to
consider the style that attaches to the coaming?

Is there an off the shelf unit that fits the 320 or has everyone used a
local canvas shop to make a custom unit?

How much wind does the Bimini tolerate before you furl it?

Thank you for your help.

Pat and Nancy, 801
