 I use a "blaze orange" hunters stocking cap purchased on sale somewhere for around $2.00 US.  Effective at keeping out the birds, and IMHO, an important safety upgrade as makes the end of the boom 'visually stand out' while sailing both at day and night.   Alan Hull #67 Macatawa MI.
