Some months ago I said we were thinking of ordering a mainsail cover from
catalinaowners.com. I had reservations about buying anything custom from a
business I can throw eggs at. I said I would report back once we did.

We did order a cover from catalinaowners.com custom canvas shop. They were
very helpful and thorough; and, we are satisfied with the product. It seems
well made with quality materials. I would do it again. The cost was
substantially less than the local canvas shops.

They send a measurement form to complete and return. The defined
measurements were sufficient to define the overall cover; however, after
talking with them on the phone, I added additional dimensions such as the
location of the Dutchman lines, the location of the vang and mainsheets so
the twist-locks would be correctly located, etc. They use heavy duty Velcro
to close the seam at the front of the mast over the very substantial zipper.
Also, Velcro closure at boom end along with a string tie to tension the
length. I opted for the Tenera thread and ss twist locks. This is shown on
their web site.

One caution: they will make the cover to the exact dimensions you provide,
so if you want some extra for some reason be sure to include it in the
instruction. I followed the instructions exactly measuring from the center
of the fwd face of the mast failing to allow for a pole ring on the mast.
As a consequence, the cover is a tad tight at that point. If your sail is
old and flakes tightly and you may be buying a new sail, you might want to
allow for more headboard and depth of the cover.
