That is how we verified the stability of the Spirit of Dana Point with the CG.  Took a lot of barrels.  Would add a little more weight and the measure the resulting angle of heal.

On the lake Okachobee canal across Florida there is a guy that puts 55
gallon drums on the edge of the boat and fills them with water until the
boat heels enough to get under the bridges and then just drain the drums
after.
