I agree. I bought my boat in 94 & never had a temp. problem. This season upon launching it started running warmer than usual. I checked the impeller for lost blades but it was fine. Others told me to check the H/E for blade parts but I replied that I had never lost a blade since I owned the boat. Short story-opened the H/E & there were about a dozen little impeller parts that had been in there since at least 1994 causing no trouble until then, just waiting 17 years to strike. Check the H/E.

So, you probably have a Yanmar. Ours is a Perkins. I'm not sure there is a
ifference re. lost impeller vanes.  Here is my story.  Bought the boat in
04. No problem for three years. Then, on a cruise, engine began to
verheat, of course with a 20kt following wind. Turns out there were at
east 4 blades in the front of the heat exchanger. None of them were from my
enure. So, surely it is possible to have old blades in the heat exchange
nd not cause a problem until you are in the most inconvenient situation for
he problem to occur.

Just a thought...could it be that a broken water pump vane or other debris 
s in the exit end of the heat exchanger?  It could be loose so it moves 
round but big enough to stop water flow out the exit if it stops across the
outlet opening.  On time, water turbulence moves it away from outlet opening
and you get normal pumping/water flow.  Next time, turbulence moves it so 
hat it blocks the outlet, in which case, you get no flow and steam.

 Yes, you may be right. The trouble may well be downstream. I was hoping I 
 could avoid pulling more stuff apart but I guess I'll have to bite the
