Follow up:  My fan was blowing the wrong way (forward into the back of the fridge). I turned it around, rotated the fan so the original wires still plugged into the electronic panel, and installed the 4" vent hole and grate opposite the fan.  The fan now vents into the aft cabin.  It is about 28 degrees outside in the PNW, 42 degrees in my boat's cabin, so I'll wait till this summer to see if the fridge cycles less.  Drinks stay cold in the cabin without the fridge on!  

On to the next project, installing a Wallas 40D diesel cabin heater!  Now onto installing heater duct...
