[C320-list] Drilling holes

I use another approach. I tied a piece of small stuff to the overhand
handhold and on the other end is a small hook. I hang a trawler lantern
from the hook when needed at anchor and stow it when I am not sailing.

I took a slightly different approach when I installed mine (btw, I've since
removed it because it required me to secure it with shock cord every time
I took the boat out. Plus it made the cabin too hot during the summers
here on the Chesapeake). But I was concerned about the thickness of the
panels and whether they could take the load of the lamp. I'm pretty sure
they
could but I opted to use 3M 5200 to cement a 1' x 3" teak square on the
ceiling over the salon table. God, it was over kill I'm sure, but the
now-unused teak block actually doesn't look too bad up there. If I were to
do it
again I think I would still screw the lantern into the teak instead of the
over head liner (might it start to oil can?) just to be safe. But I'd
definitely use a product less aggressive than 5200.

I drilled into the cabin top to install the overhead galley shelf. It was
so long ago I don't remember the process. I didn't have any problem. The
cabin top is a liner and is not the deck. The deck above is two fiberglass
layers with a balsa core between. Let's see what others say. For my two
cents you will be safe with a 3/8" self-tapping ss screw. Two or more
screws, depending on your mount, will be better.

Has anyone drilled holes in the cabin top? I want to mount a oil lamp
above the table and don't know how thick the top is. I would hate to drill
all
the way through. Thank you
