Thanks to everyone for your input. The yard took care of it this morning with the efficiency of a busy dentist: ground out the decay, flush the cavity with acetone, fill, fair and present bill. The bottom was painted and the boat splashed by noon. 

Jeff, your comments are reassuring... maybe it didn't even need the dental work, but I certainly won't worry about it now!
