[C320-list] Tsunami

I can't give a full report for the West coast, but in Northern California here
is what we've heard...

For inside the San Francisco Bay, I have not heard any reports of damage or
injuries. Was a small wave or surge which dissapated as it rolled through the
expanding bay. Here is a video...
http://www.businessinsider.com/watch-tsunami-crosses-san-francisco-bay-2011-3
At Pier 39, I didn't see damage and my boat was fine. I think boats the Bay were
fine and there hasn't been much reported on that area.

Santa Cruz harbor didn't fare so well. It seems their direct shot to the ocean
caused greater exposure to the tide pulling out and swell coming in, focusing
the damage on the harbor rather than dissapating it. They say a 6' surge there.
Damage estimated at $17M for just the docks and infrastructure, another $4M for
damage to the boats. This is 50 miles south of San Francisco Bay entrance.
Sounds like 17 boats sunk, including one harbor patrol, and 50 damaged. Appears
that the water receded by 3', then a gradual but strong surge returned. Several
boats side-tied overturned in their slips. Some came loose and were pulled out
toward the sea.

http://video.foxnews.com/v/4580750/tsunami-smashes-harbor-in-california

I've heard news of 35 boats damaged in Crescent City. They say a 8' wave there.
Reports of 8 boats sunk, 80% of the docks destroyed, one sailboat pulled out to
sea.

No injuries or deaths in the state.

Hurricanes can be prepared for.

Primarily where I was going.

Willing to bet most people are not affected by volcano's and tornado's at
least as far as sailboats go....

And not let anyone think I am insensitive, I didn't realize until after I
sent this message, how bad Japan had gotten hit.

The last report I saw was "damage" but not carnage.  Obviously more
important that sailboats.

Actually...earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, etc. can be prepared for.
Don't: level the dunes; fill in the marshlands; cut down the mangroves; live
on the beach; live on a barrier island; live on a fault line; build weakly,
etc., etc.  Man creates the disaster, not Mother Nature!

In California we constantly prepare for earthquakes through education,
training, storing supplies, and earthquake drills. Also, there are
earthquake code requirements for all building. The problems are often with
the older buildings that were built to lessor codes. I think the Japanese
have even better preparation which showed in how structures withstood an 8.9
quake. Now tsunamis are another thing. They haven't been a big issue here
but, after the other day, I think that is going to change.

I participated in a California Coastal Commission hearing in February where
approval was granted for Cresent City Marina to build a Tsunami attenuator.
As the permit was just approved last month the attenuator was obviously not
yet under construction.  It is unfortunate but fascinating how the topology
of the Pacific Ocean concentrates the energy of Asia originating tsunami's
at Cresent City and Santa Cruz.  To watch the video's of relatively small
waves coming through and creating total destruction.

Has anyone installed a spinnaker crane at the top of the mast, and if so, what
make and model, any suggestions, etc.
