[C320-list] Exhaust elbow

I took the Mack Boring diesel course a couple of months ago. They emphasized
over and over to run the engine "like a motorboat" at least once a month
(assuming normal usage). That meant hull speed rpms (about 3000) for at least an
hour. The second thing they emphasized was a prop that would allow that to
happen. With the wrong prop it can't be done. They said that most exhaust elbow
problems were due to long slow slogs.

Brad,
One observation I have made on this list is that most baby their diesels. My
hull 606 is entering its 12th season with the original elbow. When I first
bought the boat I took a diesel class, the main thing they stressed was not to
baby their diesel. I run mine at 2800 RPM's at cruising speed and occasionally
up to 3100 but only for a brief time. The diesel instructor told us the 3100 is
fine for up to a hour of run time. I have got to believe the constant lower
speeds, meant to protect the engine, is actually creating problems. Lower
speeds, therefore lower temperatures, cause carbon build up.

Peter,

Guessing your prop was clean.

Seems kinda odd that your elbow is clogged this early in the game. I have
hull 1006 with 310 hours and not seeing anything. Not saying it isn't but
just one of those, "really" type things. The Yanmar 2GM I had on my
previous C&C went 25 years without any issues.

Now for both boats I have been a "purist" only motoring when I have too.....

Let us know how it goes. With my luck I will find myself in the same
situation this, looking back going, "shoulda just said nothin!"

Good luck and take pictures, please. :)

Anyone have any experience on changing exhaust elbow, or replacing 3ym30
current cast one for a stainless steel job.
Need to replace mine.
