Barnacles are analagous to zebra mussels if you don't paint your bottom in 
the Great Lakes.  The little bastards got into my impeller for the speedo 
and clogged a drain thru hull by getting higher than the VC17 that I put in 
the drain tube.  They've made swimming off our "beach" at the YC dangerous 
without water shoes.  While I would never subject my baby to that nasty salt 
water, there are some things that are growing in the lakes that are a big 
PITA.

Paul,

That was one of the "test subjects".

If Warren can find the report I know its on there. (I likely was the one 
testing it on my last boat!!!!!)

Actually the "virgin brass" of the FOF prop didn't do too bad.

HOWEVER, I know that any build up on the brass after the first year is an 
invite to the barni's.

Speaking of Flex O' Folds, my first year was a *dream* with the folding 3 
blade prop. I did really really well with speed through the water and SOG. 
(No I don't have facts and figures, but trust me!!!!)

a.. Motoring speed was greatly increased with lower RPMs.
b.. Sailing speed *greatly* increased, especially in light wind. At 3 kts, I 
was moving on a close reach.
c.. Backing speeds were about the same, actually think just a TINY BIT 
better, boat was moving backwards quicker, and didn't walk as much.
The only thing I did not like was going backwards and having to put the boat 
in forward while still moving backwards. CLUNK. Ugly sound.

On my launch day I use Desitin on a clean shaft and prop.
I never use a diver and come out of the water six months
later with very few barnacles. Yes, it is the diaper rash
stuff for babies.

Brad and I belong to a group in our marina that did a study of prop preps
over the period of a season. They recorded what was used, and at the end of
the season, pictures were taken along with usage records and the results
compared. The cold galvanizing compound (90+% zinc,) was the winner. Most
had no barnacles on the blades with only a few on the hub. It didn't seem
to matter much how the boats were used, as I recall. The product comes in a
spray can and can be had at 1/3 the cost of WM or products labeled "Marine."
I bought mine at Lowes; but, HD or any hardware store may have it.

If there is an interest in the actual report, I may be able to find it and
post on the web site.

Do you have experience with the galvanizing compound. Your the
second person I've heard say they were using that on their prop. I just put
the same Ultra Sr-40 on mine but it doesn't hold up the best.

I've been in the water for about a month now down on the lower bay.
Was out solo yesterday in 15 to 20 out of the south. It was a great
day to sail.
