Based on anchoring a fair bit while cruising the NE coast: 
Bottom conditions are a big factor in the type and size to use. 
The biggest influence I have found is the length and size of chain used to
get max. anchor performance.  I go with the anchor size recommended (less weight 
On bow is better) and use at least a boat length of chain.   
I carry another 30'  of chain in aft storage to add if it looks like a blow may come in.
