[C320-list] Sink drains

I'm having trouble with sink drains, have been for years on our 1994 boat.
The double sinks drain into Forespar Marelon fittings with 90deg barb.  Both
barbs attach to a common "T" that goes overboard.  Due to space restriction,
alternate arrangements are limited.  Getting both barbs tight to the basket
and in the hoses is a challenge.  I want to rearrange the hoses so each sink
drain is somewhat independent of the other.  Anyone dealt with this?  

How about the barbs themselves: how to seal them?  I get leaks where the
barb attaches to the basket nut.  I put the supplied washer between the big
nut and the barb.  Should I use plumber's putty as well?  How to seal these
buggers?
