I should have the same design as you and have no problem reaching the
valves. My transmission cover is split into two halves making the forward
half pretty easy to slide out of the way to the port with my head under the
forward mattress. It is possible that I cut the cover in 1/2 myself. I know
it did that on my C270 but can't remember if I did on this boat

I also put one of those motion activated PIR lights near the valves so when
I lift the cover the lights come on

 Can you describe your inspection port in the aft engine cover?  I don't
close the seacocks for the engine and AC intakes during the season because I
have to remove the bedding and half the mattress to get to them.

Thanks very much for the tips. I think my hull, 978, does have the thru hull
forward as you describe since I can't see how I can have arms long enough to
reach it through the hanging locker as described in previous posts. Mine
exits forward of the medicine cabinet at least judging from the outside
view. I think that the inspection port must be an after marked modification
or just a lucky addition to a few hulls by the factory. I can't find one on
my boat but it sounds like a good idea. I just added an inspection port to
the wood panel over the aft engine and shaft opening-makes getting at the
air conditioner and engine thru hulls pretty easy without tearing the whole
birth apart. Thanks again for all the help.

I found a Rule 90-degree through hull on the shelf at West Marine, of all
places. The 5/8" is West Marine # 336230 (Rule # 62) and the 3/4" is WM#
396293 (Rule #62). Page 517 in the 2012 catalog. Took me a couple of hours
to figure it all out but head odor is gone. I also discovered (afterward!)
that there's an inspection port behind the toilet seat that makes it very
easy to reach into the space behind the wall and manipulate the hoses
without trying to crawl into the hanging locker.

Jim, A tip for you and anyone attempting this project.  I did it last spring
and have had that same positive results that Jeff and others report.
However, my hull #1049 is I believe a couple of hundred hulls after Jeff's,
and consequently I found a structural difference that presented a key
complication. The factory vent goes through my hull at a point where there
is only about two inches of space between the inside of the hull and an
interior structural element which I think is just part of the head forward
bulkhead.  The factory vent does a 90 degree bend so it just fit into that
tight space; but after I got the medicine cabinet out and played with it, I
discovered that there was no way that I could get a new marleon thru hull
with hose attached into that same space.  The barb of the thru hull sticks
straight out for about two inches or so and there just wasn't enough room to
get the hose onto it
-  even if I tried to shorten the barb.  Not even close.  And I could not
find a thru hull with a 90 degree bend anywhere.  So, the solution, although
far from ideal, was to leave the factory vent in place and simply plug it
permanently with some silicone caulk.  I then installed the new thru hull
about four or five inches aft of the existing vent, where there was no
structural element in the way. 

So now I have two holes in my starboard side, one occupied by the dead
factory vent.  I was not happy about this result at first, but it really
doesn't look odd, and I am sure I am the only one who would ever notice.
Most importantly, as I said above, the head odor is completely gone.

In retrospect, I'll bet that the factory vent on Jeff's boat was installed
further aft than mine, and that's why he didn't encounter this issue.

No, the holding tank already has the correct fitting.  The size of hose used
there is fine.  The factory vent takes a much smaller hose and that is part
of the problem.  Be sure to use a little silicone around the new vent to
ensure that no gasses can sneak back in around the new vent.

Zero holding tank smell all season this year.  Aft closet is back to
fiberglass and cedar smell again.  No complaints from the boss at all this
year. :)
