[C320-list] Fuel Gauge

Hi Bob:

Yes, same problem. The fuel gauge started acting up a year or so ago. This
year it finally died. Removed the wire from the sending unit, did a dead
ground test, gauge worked fine, spiked over to far right. Sending unit was
not working. Removed the unit. It was designed with a horizontal float on
an arm. The mechanism under the cap was fouled from deposits. Tried to
clean, still didn't work. Checked with Catalina, they sent me to Ezell
Co.--maker of their fuel tanks-because tanks arrive at Catalina fully
assembled. Ezell says they didn't have extra sending units, to go to Wema
USA,(www.wemausa.com) maker of the fuel sensor. I ordered a 9" long SSS
sensor. This is a new design, the float slides up and down on a stainless
steel tube. A great design. I expect this to last me forever--or whenever.

My fuel gauge has stopped working. Needle is at the full mark, but the tank
is about half empty. A few weeks ago I replaced both fuel filters. Not sure
if that may have contributed to the problem. Any suggestions?

Warren,

Thanks for the heads up. If I understand it, from prior posts that I seem
to recall, my boat #694 and Colin's #774 should have solid glass under the
traveler mounting bolts, which are the ones involved and there also is an
embedded metal plate that the bolts bolt into. (If I recall correctly, there

are four bolts (flat head machine screws) on each end of the traveler cross
beam/track, two of which extend through the cabin top and shower or interior

liner top with acorn nuts on them, and two that terminate in the embedded
plate. Can any of the list members verify that the glass is solid in this
area on this production series....i.e. no core to be wetted in this
location?

Also, it would appear to correctly fix these leaks, the entire traveler
assembly would have to be removed and re-bedded. Has anyone done this and
are there any helpful hints in doing the job?

Maybe someone can tell you if your deck core is protected where these bolts
come through. I don't know; but, if the area is not resin reinforced then
perhaps this leak is wetting the deck core in this area. A bad deal and
needs to be fixed. If not protected, the fix is to drill an oversized hole,
fill it with filled epoxy, then re-drill the correct size and reassemble.

Dennis,
We have a leak through a bolt that holds the traveller down. There are two
acorn nuts in the head, directly over the under sink cupboard door and towel
rail. One of these leak when it rains heavy, just an annoying drip. I`ve
tried to remove the bolt out to re-seal it, but I can`t get it out, so we
live with it. Don`t leave a towel on the rail.
If you work out how to do it let me know.

Thanks. Maybe I didn't do permanent damage. I noticed evidence of leaks in

two places, on deck directly below a bolt in overhead of shower (below
traveler) and at the electrical outlet near hanging locker in aft bunk area.

The only way that I could see water coming from these two places is if there

was some spraying action in the area of the anti-syphon loop relief valve.
This occurred after I was washing out the shower area and ran the sump pump
to clear some of the water a few weeks ago, and the thing is that I'm not
sure that I opened the thruhull before running the sump. If the leaks
re-appear, then I will know it is something else. If they don't, then there

is a good chance that the sump pump over pressured the anti-siphon valve and

sprayed the water to the locations that I saw.

I have a lot of practice at this having done it at least three times over
the last 7 years It does built up a lot of pressure (I've wondered it it
could be used to unclog the hose and or the thru hull but would only try as
a last resort) but I've had no problem. I did check the anti-siphon valves
in the head cabinet. Just unscrew the little valve holder on top and take
out the duckbill valve. You can check if it's still OK by blowing through it

and the sucking back. There should be no leak with the suction. If OK just
put it back in with the duck bill down. WM and other stores sell the
duckbills and it's good to have a couple extra.

If one has run the shower sump pump (just briefly) without opening the
thruhull, will there likely be permanent damage to the anti-syphon loop
relief valve? And if so, how does one get at it to repair/or check it? Not

sure, but I believe I may have mistakenly done this recently. Rats...

You definitely need the through hull head inlet open as this is also the
discharge for the shower and fridge sumps. The `Y` valve only controls which
sump you are emptying.

I tried both ways - inlet open and closed. I will check the relief
valve-perhaps I did some damage there.
Thanks,
Bob

Do you have the head inlet open to allow the sump pump to discharge. If you
don`t something will blow. Probably the relief valve in the anti-syphon loop
behind the head.

The list helped me with a related issue a few years ago involving the shower
/ fridge sump. New issue and I checked the archives so maybe a couple of
questions will get me going.
I am getting power to the pump under the sink ( it vibrates) but am not
getting the shower or fridge to drain. There is a Jabsco "pump guard"
between the Y valve and the pump. Is this the strainer that was mentioned in
the archives? I attempted to remove the front but it wouldn't budge so
didn't want to force it.
Also there was a suggestion to "clear" the hose to the pump. Would I remove
it to the left of pump? And then what?

Any ideas / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
