It may not be elegant, but I put a small length of plastic tie wrap that comes around the power line of most electronic devices into the gate hole & the hole in the mast & then insert the screw. This gives the screw enough bite to hold the gate. Has worked for several seasons.

Had the same problem this year.
I did not drill it out, simply retapped it one size larger and replaced the
screws with the appropriate size hex heads. Works fine so far.
