I agree completely. Since our boat was bought new in 2003, that seat has
resided in our storeroom. I don't know how anyone could sit on the seat and
have the visibility necessary to sail the boat.
I have a related complaint that concerns the design of the two lazarettes.
When at the helm, I constantly move from side to side to scan for other
boats, buoys, day markers, etc. Both lazarettes are angled at the aft end so
that there's no room for my feet. I see no reason, even aesthetic, for that
design.

I lost my Captain's seat I don't know how many years ago. However we found
it useless under sail. It was highly uncomfortable to steer the ship while
under sail. It has not been used since 1998 and we don't miss it at all.
