I don't open my forward hatch while sailing. Here in Ventura, CA the wave action cause spray down the forward hatch. Having learned the hard way, I close all hatches & portlights during any transit. I usually only use the line when racing and have to do alot of tacks. Cruising to the Channel Islands is usually a Starboard tack out and a Port tack return for me.
