I also found this technique to work. I assumed that it aligned the tube in
the cylinder.  Getting in and out of the settee one leans on table which
could cock thus jam the post in the cylinder.

Make sure the lock nut knob is loose, then slam the top of top table above
the post, with your hand.  Sounds weird but it has something to do releasing
the pressure inside the center tube.
