I used thin (1/8 inch) rubber insulation strips with glue one one side---worked for 17 years, also kept out water when washing with pressure hose.  Ken

You may want to try a couple OD those stick-on soft rubber dots that people put on the backs of picture frames. The felt is a great idea, but may get moldy from the rain in some locations. We don't have rain in Southern California, of course, but we do rinse our boats with a hose. Haven't checked to see if water dissolves the adhesive on the sticky dots.
