[C320-list] 3M 4200 fast cure

Ahhh, unless newer boats were done differently (and I doubt it,) the bolts
in the chain plates do not carry the load from the shrouds to the rods
inside that are attached to the liner. The load is carried by the plate the
shroud is attached to and the other end of the plate is attached to the rod
inside. The bolts only hold the facing cover on the deck and inside
together. The bedding is to seal the plate as it passes through the deck.
If you fill the deck opening with a flexible, adhesive material to the level
of the deck, then probably butyl tape can be used to bed the cover to the
deck. I don't see how butyl tape can be used to bed the thru-deck plate.
I could be wrong, I was once in 1962, so if I am, please, someone correct
me.

Jim,

You are correct. The bolts provide the strength and the butyl will provide
the water tightness. They will not leak again as long as you own the boat!
Follow the steps Compass Marine provides for using it around the bolts and
you will find it is an ideal solution for chainplates (and any other
hardware that has a nut on the other end--the one thing butyl requires is
compression...good luck!

On our boat (hull 978 2004) the shrouds are attached to a plate on the deck
with a welded "eye" on it. There is an identical plate inside the cabin thta
the rod attaches to. The two plates are held together with four bolts that
go through the deck. I haven't removed them yet but I don't think that the
plates themselves penetrate the deck, just the bolts. I think (hope) that
with the two plates bolted together that adhesion won't be needed and that
the tape will provide a flexible seal. Fingers crossed. The youtube piece
from Sailrite and the youtube piece from Compass were very helpful-thanks. I
can see a lot of uses for this stuff.

If Jim is referring to what I call chain plates (thingies that penetrate the
deck and attach to the ss rods in the cabin,) then I don't think butyl tape
will work for that.  I'm not even sure 4200 is the best.  On the advice of
our marina I used BoatLife LifeCalk about 8 years ago and they are just
beginning to leak now.  There may be even better products out there now by
Sylkaflex, 3M, and others.  The qualities needed seem to be: strong adhesion
and flexibility.
Jim doesn't say what year is his hull; but, if it is an early one, it might
be a good idea to remove 1/2" of deck core and replace with filled epoxy to
prevent water entry to the core.

I use butyl tape for anything that requires a water tight seal but does not
need adhesion.

For what its worth, I've picked up 4200 at Walmart before (and its less
expensive).
