[C320-list] Stuffing Box Nut

Jason,

The manual may say it takes 3 rings, but I've *never* known it to take more
than 2. They should really fix that!!!

Just stagger the joints 180 degrees and you'll be absolutely fine,
especially if you slice them at an angle.

I'm certain the manual is wrong and the yard will just use 2 if they do it.
You have to have room to adjust it and if you jam it in tight without
adjustment room, you're asking for an overheated prop shaft.

Normally, you'd tighten it up pretty good, then back it off and be sure that
the shaft can be turned by hand. Once you splash and are tied up, put it in
gear and see if it drips or gets hot. If it gets too hot to touch, you just
back it off slightly. If it drips, tighten it a tiny nudge. If you're
using the dripless stuff, it'll take just a bit of tweaking like this and
then it'll be fairly dry from then on.

Cheers!
-Jeff Hare

I tried a number of things yesterday and finally gave up. I didn't want
to make the issue worse or damage the treads in some way. The nut came
over very easily once I broke it free. So it doesn't seem like the threads
are damage. I'm going to call the yard and have them look at in on
Monday. At this point I'm so frustrated with it that it would be worth an
hour of yard time.
