[C320-list] Stuffing Box Nut

I have been following the shaft packing discussion, but have not noticed the following comment:
Teflon packing installed with Teflon paste: When I repacked 8 year ago, I was generous with the paste.
Each fall when the boat is hauled I loosen the nut and let it sit that way until spring. I then back the nut further
to where I can again wipe a fresh batch of paste on the installed packing and shaft and run the nut hand tight.
On launch, I turn the shaft by hand and adjust to a drop or so per/min. Hand tighten the jam nut. I then sea trial the
boat and check that the shaft and packing gland feel cool. I make adjustment if needed. If all is ok, I lock the
jam nut more firmly. Usually no adjustment is needed during the sailing season and the little leakage
I start with seems to silt closed. Periodic checks indicate a cool running gland.

Warren,
That's called being lazy. :)
I actually pull the whole stuffing box, clean it up repack it and reinstall
it. That's called being (well, I won't say what my wife calls this
behavior).

For what it's worth, I took an owners in diesel maintenance and the old Dr.
Diesel who taught it told me he never removes the old packing on adds a new
ring or two. He said the old packing wears away making room for a new ring.
I can't say whether this is sage advice or old wives tale.

I tried a number of things yesterday and finally gave up. I didn't want
to make the issue worse or damage the treads in some way. The nut came
over very easily once I broke it free. So it doesn't seem like the threads
are damage. I'm going to call the yard and have them look at in on
Monday. At this point I'm so frustrated with it that it would be worth an
hour of yard time.
