I have the Perkins with the Hurth transmission. The fluid level is checked WITHOUT screwing in dipstick. As a heads up, there is a very thin washer installed over the dip stick and is comperessed between the tranny case and the bottom of dipstick. Be careful to not lose the washer when pulling the dipstick and be sure to reinstall the washer when closing up the dipstick. Two other 'beware", tranny case and dipstick appear to be aluminum on my rig ... do not over tighten. Second, I change my tranny fluid yearly (far more frequently than required but cheap insurance (IMHO). I use the same plastic tube / change pump as I use to suck the oil out of the engine. I would NOT use any tube in the tranny other than soft flexible plastic. Tranny fluid capacity is tiny ... something like 3 oz. Never run without proper fluid level ... ATF both cools and lubes the gear set.

As to a post from last week, factory tag on my tranny says sail with tranny in reverse or neutral, never in forward.
