Warren,  good info. and photo's.  The Vetus looks quite a bit less volume than the factory muffler. 
The fact that it has worked for 7 years is a good proof test of the installation.    I believe the muffler volume is sized to accept all the exhaust hose volume draining into it when the engine is shut off to avoid back flooding the engine.   I will check with Vetus..   It looks like a nice solution.
