Thanks for the link Dave

eems that is the new version I guess, all streamlined and curvy! However I was hoping to buy just the metal “pod” to fit my existing wheel pedestal (I’m pretty sure the new one wont fit my old pedestal anyway!) and then you can buy a perfectly good Morse single lever engine control for a LOT less than Edson are selling theirs for! (like this one for equivalent of $200: http://www.asap-supplies.com/marine/side-mounted-single-lever-boat-controls/engine-and-gear-change-control-unit-side-mounted-single-606103)

I guess i need to look at a salvage yard!

The Edson picture does make it look “not much better”! If you look at the link I posted to my old boat (http://tinypic.com/r/flasn5/8) you can see the lever is both longer and a lot nearer to the starboard rim of the wheel. The point is - as you obviously know - you dont have to stand behind the wheel with a single lever control, you can stand to one side of it and manipulate the wheel rim with one hand and reach around to control the throttle with the other. Trust me - it makes manoeuvring at close quarters SOOO much easier and safer!

Most non_catalinas that I have sailed in have the same sort of single lever control but usually to one side of the cockpit, so again (if it is on the starboard side of the cockpit) you can control the wheel with your left hand and the throttle with your right without any contortions needed!
