[C320-list] gear box

How many of you have had to replace your gear box due to failure (or imminent failure)?  FanaSea is 1995 Hull #198.  We are thinking of either refurbishing the existing Perkins engine or replacing the engine altogether. In either case the gear box will be new too.  Our mechanic told us that the gear box Catalina installed in this vintage of boat has often failed prematurely.   Has anyone had experience with this?
