I have gone with 1/2" braided lines on the Great Lakes and San Francisco. I usually get the West Marine Double Braid Nylon with 12" eye (25' length). I got a batch of them for 40% off at one of their big sales.
If I know I will be away from by boat for a stretch, say 30 days for example, and it is a particular windy and/or stormy period I double up my lines for a factor of safety.
I also carry a 100' dock line for all those fun occasions.
This has worked for my on Dawn Treader since day one. Never had a problem.
