I buy a can of Krown rust treatment and spray on a coating over the entire engine and mounts each fall. Seems to be working fine and will not harm rubber components.JohnM1999#574

Common ordinary steel brushes will deposit microscopic particles of iron on the surface you are brushing. Guess what. The iron deposits will eventually rust and discolor the surface. This is how you can see 'rust" on stainless rails, hardware etc. Stainless steel that has come in contact with steel chain will show evidence of localized rust. If the material to be cleaned is carbon steel or cast iron, then steel brushes are fine. No steel brushes allowed on our boat just for good practice. Hope this helps.
