[C320-list] Oil level in transmission

On my 1997 I have an orange dip stick on the starboard side of the tran. 

On my car I see marks that tell me how much oil to add. Not so on the boat.

So how to you gauge the oil level? Clean oil is hard to see on the stick.

How much is two much or two little? 

Should the stick just sit on top for the read?
