Is there a valve controlling engine fluid circulating through the water heater to heat the water?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Alan's method worked well. I was trying to get the air out with the cap on ant then opening it up to add fluid and it didn't work that way. The yanmar doesn't have a bleed valve but does have a tiny hole in the thermostat that might perform that function but I don't know.

So I've decided on Samson XLS Extra, NOW to splice or use a halyard hitch, a halyard hitch looks appealing but will Samson XLS hold a knot? I'm reading both yes and no. Also, since the jib halyard is fairly new but it's 7/16 diameter and spliced eye are hanging up in the sheive I might cut the splice and use the halyard hitch in that one.

You should simply fill the engine through the filler cap at the top of the engine, BUT FIRST when you replaced the water heater the hoses to and from the water heater from the engine should have been filled by pouring coolant into one hose until it came out the other then quickly attach to fittings on the engine. put cap on, run up and start engine, run back down open filler cap and add as needed. Sometimes you might get an air bubble anyway and the engine will heat up and sound an alarm, simply shut it off, top off of needed and restart after about 20 minutes giving the engine time to settle and any added coolant time to warm up. The momentary high heat won't hurt the engine if you shut it down right away.?
I switched from green coolant to the Yanmar Red coolant last Summer and flushed my motor 9 times, sometimes it would heat up as you described, sometimes not. It always worked itself out though. I think in my case the motor being warm with colder coolant in it would close the thermostat and restrict flow or simply an air bubble. Even when changing out the green stuff in previous years the temp Guage seemed to wander until I took it out for a good run....while CLOSELY watching the temp guage!

Of course, everyone has their preference, so I'll share mine. I have always just used a bowline closed up tight with the tail looped back into a half hitch. I like the bowline because:
- it'll never come undone, yet is *so* easy to remove no matter how hard it's been pulled on
- having a fairly FAT knot at the shackle means that there's no chance it gets pulled into the shiev.
- Over the years, I've cut off couple inches of the end and re-whipped it to allow the shackle to use a fresh part of the line, and also to have the part of the halyard that sits on the shiev shifted to avoid wear on exactly the same spot. Only takes a couple inches removed to do this. It's been enough to do this twice in the last 8 or 9 years.

When we winter our boat, we always tie the aft halyards together into a fist-sized knot with a smaller diameter Messenger line attached. Then hoist the halyards to the top of the mast (knots and because both lines are tied together keep them from going into the mast. The messenger line gets wrapped around the backstay a dozen times or so (may-pole style) then attached to the aft rail. We do the same thing for our Genoa & Spinnaker halyards. This keeps the halyards inside the mast and under our winter cover to protect them from UV and weather damage over the winter.

Maybe it's not a bad idea if you're in hot sunny climate and are not going to be on the boat for a decent length of time, too. Our halyards are in great shape still. The Genoa/Spinnaker and topping lift are Factory lines, and the Main halyard is Yale Crystaline from back in 2004-ish.

Great idea about storing the halyards in the mast off season!!!! I would RATHER tie the shackle with a knot as long as the Samson XLS Extra will hold it. After looking into all this at least I know exactly why the 7/16 jib halyard is getting stuck up there.

Of course, everyone has their preference, so I'll share mine.?? I have always just used a bowline closed up tight with the tail looped back into a half hitch.?? I like the bowline because:
-? it'll never come undone, yet is *so* easy to remove no matter how hard it's been pulled on
-? having a fairly FAT knot at the shackle means that there's no chance it gets pulled into the shiev.
-? Over the years, I've cut off couple inches of the end and re-whipped it to allow the shackle to use a fresh part of the line, and also to have the part of the halyard that sits on the shiev shifted to avoid wear on exactly the same spot.? Only takes a couple inches removed to do this.? It's been enough to do this twice in the last 8 or 9 years.

When we winter our boat, we always tie the aft halyards together into a fist-sized knot with a smaller diameter Messenger line attached.? Then hoist the halyards to the top of the mast (knots and because both lines are tied together keep them from going into the mast.?? The messenger line gets wrapped around the backstay a dozen times or so (may-pole style) then attached to the aft rail.? We do the same thing for our Genoa & Spinnaker halyards.? This keeps the halyards inside the mast and under our winter cover to protect them from UV and weather damage over the winter.?

Maybe it's not a bad idea if you're in hot sunny climate and are not going to be on the boat for a decent length of time, too.?? Our halyards are in great shape still.? The Genoa/Spinnaker and topping lift are Factory lines, and the Main halyard is Yale Crystaline from back in 2004-ish.

???
So I've decided on Samson XLS Extra, NOW to splice or use a halyard hitch, a halyard hitch looks appealing but will Samson XLS hold a knot? I'm reading both yes and no. Also, since the jib halyard is fairly new but it's 7/16 diameter and spliced eye are hanging up in the sheive I might cut the splice and use the halyard hitch in that one.

Thanks for sharing this information. Here a cool website.

What knot do you use to tie your sheets to the Genoa?

If you don't want to splice, there's a neater knot for this that takes less space enabling the head of the sail to get right to the masthead without the knot fouling the sheaves first!

It's called a halyard knot and a quick google on that will bring up various versions. I prefer the Selden halyard knot as the bitter end lies flatter.

Depends if you have the tall mast version maybe but 115ft is way too much but gives excess for trimming as discussed. The main halyard I just replaced was 101ft!
